When does the adult coat come in?

Poodles benefit greatly from being introduced to grooming at a young age. Starting early helps them get used to regular brushing, scissoring, and clipping, which will become essential as they grow older. Although a puppy’s coat doesn’t require much maintenance, putting in the effort early on will make grooming much easier throughout their life.

At around 6 to 10 months of age, a Poodle's coat begins to change from the soft, wavy puppy coat to a curlier, more tangle-prone adult coat. At this stage, you may notice the coat becoming more challenging to manage, as it can quickly form mats if knots aren't regularly removed.

Though Poodles are often called "non-shedding," they actually do shed a little. However, the dead hair tends to get trapped in their curly coats, which can cause tangling more quickly. This major coat change happens again around the 2-year mark when the adult coat fully grows in, though in some Poodles, this final coat doesn’t fully develop until they are around 3 years old.

Genetics influence coat changes too. Standard Poodles usually experience this transition later, between 9 to 16 months, and complete the change within about 3 months. Smaller Poodles, like Toys, tend to have a slower coat change, which can take around 9 months.

What coat type does an adult Poodle have?

An adult Poodle’s coat is thick, dense, and made of very curly, coarse, single-layer fur. Adult Poodle curls can range from softer wavier curls to coarse, tight spiral curls and even cord-like ringlets. Daily brushing (with a pin brush, not just a bristle brush) is recommended. A slicker brush is the best choice for targeting removal of tangles and knots to prevent matting. After brushing, a wide-toothed comb should be used to check for any knots or tangles you may have missed.

TIP: Avoid the shampoo mistake! After shampooing, always use a conditioner on your Poodle’s coat. Conditioner helps to close the hair cuticle, reducing knots and making brushing much easier. Detangling sprays, or anti-static sprays, are also popular for preventing frizz, flyaways, and damaged ends. Those types of sprays can also help prevent tangles and are best when used before and during brushing.

For more information, check out our blog dedicated to conditioner: The Importance of Conditioner, do I really need it?

Which clippers are best for the Poodle coat?

When it comes to clipping a Poodle’s dense, curly coat, you’ll want clippers that are up to the task. Look for “Super Duty” clippers specifically designed for full body clipping on “difficult” or thick coats. This ensures that even if your Poodle has an extra dense or corded coat—or if you encounter a tough mat—your clippers can handle it. In general, a professional, multi-speed clipper with enough power, speed, and torque is ideal. Check the clipper description for phrases like “for difficult, thick, wool, or mixed texture coats” to make sure it’s a good fit for your Poodle.

TIP: Know what A5 means when choosing your clipper - If a clipper is labeled as an “A5 model”, it’s compatible with all universal comb attachments and A5 blades, giving you the widest range of accessories to choose from, now and in the future. Some clippers and trimmers have a limited range of blades and comb attachments, but A5 model clippers fit almost every blade and comb attachment available by all brands. Note that trimmers are not A5 models and may have unique attachments that don’t fit other brands or models.

Clippers for Poodles

The list below includes some of our best-selling A5 clippers, all rated for the Poodle coat. These are a great starting point, but don’t feel limited to just these options. Use the tips above to help you compare and choose the best clippers for your Poodle’s unique coat, or click the button below to take our Clipper Quiz for tailored recommendations.

CORDED clippers for the Poodle coat

[product=andis-agc-brushless-super-2-speed-cobalt]
A newer tech brushless motor, A5 model clipper, with 2 speeds. Look for the one with 'Super' in the name. Brushless motors run quieter, weigh less, require less long term maintenance, yet have more power and torque for difficult coats. Includes size #10 1.5mm Andis CeramicEdge Blade
[/product]

[product=wahl-km10-2-speed-brushless-clipper]
Wahl's corded brushless motor option. A level up from the KM2. A 2 speed, A5 model, Super Duty rated clipper. Includes a size #10 1.8mm Wahl Ultimate Competition Series Blade, and 4 Stainless Steel Comb Attachments for lengths up to 13mm.
[/product]

[product=andis-excel-5-speed-clipper-gloss-black]
A smaller body clipper for smaller hands. Rotary motor, A5 model, Super Duty Rated, but with the extra benefit of 5 speeds. Same top 2 speeds with 3 extra slower speeds that 2 speed models don't have. Slower speeds reduce blade heat and run quieter with less vibration for sensitive areas, anxious pets or puppies. Includes size #10 1.5mm Andis UltraEdge Blade.
[/product]

TIP: If your budget allows, a 5-speed clipper is worth considering (available in both corded and cordless options). The lower speeds let you reduce noise and vibration—perfect for puppies, anxious dogs, sensitive areas, or if you’re new to clipping. Plus, lower speeds help the blade stay cooler longer, reducing the risk of blade burn and letting you take your time. With a 5-speed clipper, you still have the higher speeds and extra power needed for tough, thick, or knotted areas.

CORDLESS clippers for the Poodle coat

[product=andis-pulse-zr-ii-5-speed-cordless-with-2-batteries-and-case]

[/product]

[product=heiniger-opal-cordless-2-speed-with-1-battery]

[/product]

For help comparing cordless models: Check the features to help you compare, such as whether they have removable / replaceable batteries for charging / replacing, or whether you need to plug in the clipper itself when it runs out of charge (if it's the type without removable / replaceable batteries). Compare run-time and charge time. Whether they come with 1 or 2 batteries. The cost of buying extra batteries later. Whether they come with a case or not. Whether the battery / clipper has a charge indicator or not. It's not a 'right or wrong' for each of these considerations, as it depends on personal preference and intended use. For more information, you can also read our Cordless Clipper Comparison Guide here

What else do I need to buy when getting clippers?

All the clippers listed above include a standard #10 blade, but they do not come with longer blades or comb attachments. If you want to maintain a longer coat length, be sure to check the guide below and plan to purchase any extra blades or comb attachments separately.

For all clippers, you’ll also need clipper oil and coolant to keep them in good working order. To achieve different coat lengths, you can choose either a comb attachment or a longer blade. Using different comb attachments with the included #10 blade is an affordable option, though keep in mind that the blade will require more frequent sharpening or replacement if it's the only one you use.

For more information on how to maintain your clipper blades, you can read our Clipper Blade Maintenance Guide here.

[product=andis-clipper-blade-oil-118ml]

The Andis Cool Care Plus blade spray is a 5 in 1 formula that serves as a lubricant, disinfectant, coolant, cleaner and rust preventive with a country-fresh scent. Designed to enhance clipping action, reduce friction and help to preserve your blades.
[/product]

How long will a blade stay sharp?

There are so many factors that there isn't an easy answer to that question. However you can get standard steel blades sharpened when they become dull or blunt, rather than having to buy new blades every time. Ceramic blades stay sharper for longer than full steel blades, but when ceramic blades eventually become dull or blunt, you will need to replace the cutter instead of having it sharpened. You can get both ceramic or steel blades for all the A5 model clippers listed above. Do take care with your coat prep though, as poor prep will dull a blade very fast (sometimes within minutes instead of weeks or months). Read more about coat prep below to avoid causing your blade to become blunt earlier than it should.

Trimmers for Poodles

Many Poodle owners gravitate towards trimmers for grooming smaller, sensitive areas, like the feet, between paw pads, around the face, ears, nose, and eyes, as well as for a “sanitary trim” around the bottom, groin, and genitals. While full-size clippers can also be used, trimmers are often a better choice if your dog is sensitive to noise or vibration, or if you need a smaller blade to access tight areas. For Toy Poodles, in particular, trimmers are almost essential due to their smaller size.

Trimmers are lighter, smaller, and quieter than clippers, making them ideal for anxious dogs or beginners. The narrow blade width also helps reach delicate areas more safely, reducing the risk of injury.

Trimmers for the Poodle coat

MINI Trimmers have around a 3cm blade width. Ideal size for both Toy and Miniature Poodles, for paws, faces, armpits, and for trimming any delicate or tricky areas. An excellent choice for shaving poodle feet on Poodles of any size. Mini trimmers typically have a very short fixed-length blade that is equivalent to a #30 or #40 blade, and for this reason are not recommended for shaving sanitary areas.

[product=shernbao-waterproof-mini-trimmer]
The Shernbao Waterproof Mini Trimmer is ultra light weight and ideal for precision trims in small, intricate areas like paw pads, face, eyes, and ears. [product=heiniger-style-trimmer-mini]
The Heiniger Saphir Style MINI Trimmer for professionals is a proper mini trimmer, with the quality, features and design you would expect from Heiniger in a fantastic smaller size.
[/product]

MIDI Trimmers have a medium width blade around 4cm. They typically have an adjustable blade with 4-5 lengths, though each model varies so make sure to check the description. Midi trimmers are popular for trimming the sanitary area on Poodles of any size as they have a long enough blade to avoid irritation, and are a good choice for shaving Poodle faces and feet on Standard and Miniature Poodles.

What blades are best for the Poodle coat?

First, check if your clipper is an A5 model, as almost every blade will fit it regardless of brand. This means you can mix and match brands to fit your needs: an Andis blade on a Wahl clipper, a Geib blade on an Andis clipper, or a Wahl comb attachment on an Andis blade.

The best clipper blades for your Poodle will depend on the look you want to achieve. Popular blades include the #10 (included with your clipper) or #15 blade, which are great for close cuts on sanitary areas and paw pads, or as a base for comb attachments. For body trimming, popular options are the #3, #4, #5, and #7 blades. You can also achieve longer or shorter coat lengths to suit your preference.

To keep the coat longer, you can use either a longer blade or a comb attachment on a short blade, like the #10.

Poodle Blade Guide

#10 blade > This “standard blade” is included with most clippers. It leaves the coat around 1.5mm (1.8mm with some brands) and fits all universal comb attachments. A #10 blade by itself is perfect for areas that need a short, close cut, like between paw pads, under the ears, on the nose bridge, base of the tail, and around the genitals, groin, or bottom.

TIP: We recommend stainless steel comb attachments (as opposed to plastic) for the dense, curly Poodle coat, as these have a more secure fit on the blade, so are better suited for clipping thicker, curlier coats.

[product=wahl-universal-stainless-steel-comb-set-8-pack-container]
The Wahl set of 8 stainless steel comb attachments covers all the most popular coat lengths in one set, from 3mm to 25mm. They fit on all brands of A5 blades on both size 10, 15, and 30 blades.
[/product]

Your choice of blade length for your Poodle should depend on the type of coat and the style you prefer. Popular options include blades #3, #4, #5, and #7, with the #7 providing the shortest cut among them. To help you find the right blade or comb attachment for your desired coat length, check out our blade guide. If you have a specific coat length in mind (measured in mm), you can find the corresponding blade in the chart below.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW before you buy any blade:

Blades longer than a 10, come in different types. Skip Tooth (ST), Finish Cut (called F or FC), and Fine Tooth (FT). Unless you are experienced or trained using them, only get the finish cut version in any blade longer than a #10. Longer blades, such as 3, 4, 5 and 7  come in ST, FC, and FT. All blades 10 or shorter, such as 10, 15, or 30 are always finish cut.

Fine Tooth (FT) blades provide a super-smooth finish but require a perfectly prepped coat. These are best for professional groomers, so we recommend sticking with FC blades if you’re starting out. Read more about the uses of FT Blades here.

[product=andis-ultraedge-size-7-fc-blade-3-2mm]
Slightly longer than a 10 blade. Leaves the coat nice and short, around 3mm. Good for knot-prone or matted coats and for short summer cuts. This is the FC version which will leave a smooth, even clip, and will fit any A5 clipper.
[/product]

[product=andis-ultraedge-size-5-fc-blade-6-3mm]
For a longer body length than a 7. Leaves the coat around 6mm. This is the FC version which will leave a smooth, even clip, and will fit any A5 clipper.
[/product]

[product=andis-ultraedge-size-4-fc-blade-9-5mm]
A popular length for a Poodle pet clip, especially for a short summer length. Leaves the coat around 1cm (9.5mm). This is the FC version which will leave a smooth, even clip, and will fit any A5 clipper.
[/product]

[product=andis-ultraedge-size-3-3-4-fc-blade-13mm]
The most popular body blade for a longer finish than a 4. The coat needs to be knot and tangle free when using any longer blade like this. Leaves the coat around 13mm. For all 3 blades, only get the F or FC version unless experienced, not the ST. This is the FC version which will leave a smooth, even clip, and will fit any A5 clipper.
[/product]

Longer coat lengths:

If you're looking for longer coat lengths than those provided by the blades mentioned above, the other option is to use comb attachments. These attachments allow for coat lengths ranging from 1.5mm to 2.5cm, giving you the flexibility to choose how long you'd like the coat to be. This is especially useful for creating different lengths in various areas, such as keeping the legs, top of the head, and ears longer than the rest.

While many choose to purchase comb attachments as a set for the best value and maximum versatility—allowing for adjustments in coat length throughout the seasons—you can also buy them individually to suit your specific needs.

Here's how to attach combs on to your clipper >

Keep in mind that the longer you want your Poodle's coat to be, the more important coat preparation becomes. If your dog's coat has knots that you can't remove by brushing, you may need to use a shorter blade to get underneath the knots, as blades and comb attachments cannot cut through them. A good way to check your coat prep is to run a grooming comb through the coat. If your grooming comb cannot get through the coat, your comb attachment wont be able to either.

Scissors > After you clip

After completing the initial clipping, you may notice some uneven spots on the coat. This is completely normal and indicates that it’s time to move on to scissor work. There are three main types of scissors you'll want to know about: straight, curved, and thinning shears.

Straight Scissors
Straight scissors are the easiest to use, as they’re similar to regular paper scissors. They’re versatile and perfect for removing large sections of hair, trimming uneven areas missed by the clippers, and tidying up specific spots like the tail, ears, and face.

Curved Scissors
Curved scissors quickly become favorites for many groomers. Since a dog’s body has few straight lines, curved scissors help create smoother, more natural shapes with less effort. They’re particularly useful for shaping teddy bear heads, poodle pom poms, and rounding off feet, tails, and ears.

Thinning Scissors
Thinning scissors are excellent finishing scissors. They trim and tidy the coat without leaving blunt lines, resulting in a smooth yet textured finish. They can be used to blend away clipper or scissor marks, blend long areas into short areas, and they’re especially popular for the face, helping achieve a softer, more natural look that many pet owners prefer.

If you’re new to thinning scissors, consider beginner-friendly options from Shernbao, Witte Roseline, or Geib Gator. A shorter thinner (around 6.5 inches) with a higher tooth count (about 40 or more) is a great all-purpose choice.

To help you choose the right scissors, we’ve created a detailed guide covering various scissor types, lengths, handle styles, and brands, which you can find here.

Alternatively, you can click the button below to take our Scissor Quiz for tailored recommendations:

[/product]

If you haven’t used clippers or scissors on your Poodle before, we recommend seeking advice first from a groomer, getting advice or lessons from your breeder, or watching ‘How to clip a Poodle’ videos on YouTube for tutorials before you start. We also have a guide dedicated to correct scissor technique, which is particularly important with thinning scissors to avoid catching and damage, which isn't covered by the warranty. Check out our scissor technique guide here

Tips for Poodle ear care

Some Poodles are more prone to wax and dirt build-up in their ears than others. To help prevent issues, clean your dog's ears at least once a month. Apply a few drops of ear cleaner on a cotton wool pad, or use a pre-soaked ear cleansing pad, and gently rub the inside areas and folds of the ears to remove any visible wax and dirt – don’t clean what you can’t see! This routine can help prevent more serious ear problems from developing.

Tips for Poodle eyes and for tear and saliva staining

White or light-coated breeds are especially prone to staining around the eyes, mouth, and ears due to tears and saliva. To help prevent this, it’s recommended to use a product like Fidos Tear Stain Remover regularly. These types of products work best as a preventative measure, so make it a habit to clean the eye area often to minimize build-up and staining. Keep watch for longer eyebrow hairs or eyelashes. If they touch the eye they can irritate it, causing excessive tearing, leading to tear staining. However if your dog has constant eye discharge, and trimming eyebrows and eyelashes makes no difference, it’s time for a visit to the Vet.

[product=yuup-eye-contour-cleansing-lotion-150ml]
For cleaning around the eyes, Yuup! Eye Contour Cleansing Lotion is enriched with Green Tea and softening Lotus Flower extracts, along with distilled Euphrasia water, soothing, calming and refreshing. The proteins extracted from Moringa seeds limit the adhesion of pollution particles and smog to the hair, ensuring longer lasting protection.
[/product]

[product=fidos-tear-stain-remover-125ml]
Fidos Tear and Saliva Stain Remover is the professional groomers and breeders go-to for good reason. Removes tear stains and saliva stains on cats and dogs. Soap-free for sensitive skin & safe for use around eyes and mouth. Especially handy to have on-hand for white and pale-coated pets prone to tear staining. [product=bio-groom-stain-free-eye-cream-19g]

Dealing with tangles and knots

detangler spray and slicker brush are a great combo to remove tangles. Regular pin or bristle brushes aren't sufficient for tackling knots, although a pin brush is ideal for daily brushing

For stubborn knots and tangles, start by breaking the knot apart with your fingers and apply detangler spray directly to the knotted area. Then, with your slicker brush, brush the knot out, starting from the end of the hair and work towards the skin. Then take your grooming comb and run it through the coat to ensure the knot has been completely brushed out. If you encounter very tough knots, you may need to cut them out, clip underneath them, or use a dematter. Take care when removing knots as skin may be pulled in to the knot, so it’s best for a professional to remove felted or matted knots that are close to the skin. When using scissors for knot removal, safety tip scissors are recommended unless experienced.

[product=bio-groom-anti-stat-detangler-aid-355ml]
This product was developed to control "fly-away" hair prone to frizz, fuzz and tangles. Eliminates static charges on hair that can result from shampooing, drying, brushing and combing. Poodle Shampoo

Due to the poodles high-maintenance coat, frequent bathing is often required. If you will be bathing every week, it's important not to use anything too harsh on the skin and coat to prevent dryness. Detangling and moisturizing shampoos can be very beneficial for maintaining a long poodle coat.

[product=bio-groom-so-gentle-hypoallergenic-shampoo-355ml]

Whitening shampoo is very popular for light-coloured Poodles. We like MiPuchi by Flavio Whitening Shampoo in particular. Most whitening shampoos are purple or blue based, which counteracts any yellow tones in the coat, similar to human toning shampoo. The MiPuchi Whitening Shampoo is different as it enhances the white coat with an optical brightening action, and continually works to whiten the coat when exposed to sunlight through the power of chamomile. All whitening shampoo we sell will not bleach the coat, but can still be more drying than normal shampoo, so conditioner is extra important to use after any whitening shampoo.

For use on all breeds of dogs and cats, and all coat types. Does not stain or discolour hair. No alcohol, parabens, sulphates or harmful chemicals. 500ml makes up to 3 litres.

Poodle Conditioner

One common Poodle mistake we often see pet owners make is to skip conditioner! Many dog owners rely solely on shampoo, but even the gentlest shampoos can strip the coat of its natural moisture. Shampoo is designed to open the hair cuticle to remove oil, dirt, and buildup, making the use of conditioner even more crucial, especially if you prefer to keep your Poodle’s coat long.

Conditioner helps seal the cuticle after shampooing, restoring hydration and moisture. It makes it easier to remove existing knots and tangles while preventing new ones from forming. By closing the cuticle, the hair becomes smoother and less prone to roughness, allowing brushes, combs, and clipper blades to glide through more easily.

Since Poodles require frequent brushing, conditioner also helps repair damage caused by regular grooming and the use of dryers. It reduces dry, frizzy ends and minimizes static. Additionally, remember that the more often you wash any dog, the more essential it becomes not to skip the conditioner!

Poodle Dryers

When it comes to drying your Poodle, having the right dryer can make all the difference in maintaining that dense, stunning coat. Poodles have unique grooming needs depending on their size, and the right dryer helps ensure their curls stay smooth, fluffy, and mat-free.

First, lets talk about the different types of dryers. The main two types are Velocity Dryers (also called Blasters or Blowers), and Fluff Dryers (also called stand dryers). Velocity dryers use high-pressure air to force water out of the coat quickly. They’re ideal for getting the bulk of the water out and for breeds like Poodles, where preventing mats and tangles is key. Fluff dryers, on the other hand, use gentler airflow with more focus on shaping, straightening, and styling the coat. They’re better suited for fine-tuning after the coat is mostly dry or for more delicate grooming areas like the face and feet.

For Toy and Miniature Poodles, the Shernbao Super Cyclone Dryer or the Vortex 5 Dryer are excellent choices. Both are compact yet powerful options, ideal for smaller Poodles. They help blow out those delicate curls quickly and efficiently, ensuring your dog’s coat dries evenly without excessive heat. They can be used as a velocity dryer, or combined with a stand and rigid hose to use for fluff drying. Fluff dryers are also ideal for Poodles of any size who have a long coat, top knot, or pom poms, as its imperative to get these areas as straight as possible before scissoring.

For Standard Poodles, you’ll want something with a bit more power, like the Shernbao Typhoon Dryer or the MetroVac Radiance Dryer. Standard Poodles have a much larger surface area and therefore more coat, and these professional-grade dryers are designed to handle larger dogs and achieve fast drying times. Both provide the air pressure needed to break through the thickest part of the coat, regardless of the length, making sure it dries thoroughly and helps to straighten the curls, ready for grooming.
