Comparing all corded clippers

Andis AGC clippers

Andis AGC colours

A very popular model. Often tops our best sellers list as our #1 selling corded clipper. The old AGC 2 Speed and Super 2 Speed have been replaced with the new Andis AGC Brushless 2 Speed, and Brushless Super 2 Speed.

Current models:

AGC Brushless 2 Speed (Black), and the AGC Brushless Super 2 Speed (4 colours)

These new model AGC's all have a brushless motor and weigh just 299 grams, making them the lightest clipper rated Super Duty for all coat types. Being brushless, the motor also runs quieter, cooler and smoother, yet offers more power and torque for difficult coats. Brushless motors do not need the brushes replaced (brushes on a rotary motor wear down over time), for less maintenance, and have a longer motor lifetime.

Both are A5 model clippers. They fit all brands of A5 blades from size 50 (under 1mm coat length), up to size 3 (over 1cm), and all brands of universal comb attachments (for coat lengths under 3mm to over 3cm). They come with one #10 blade. Additional blades and comb attachments available separately.

The AGC 2 Speed is the Black AGC model. Rated high-level Heavy Duty to entry-level Super Duty. 2 speed corded clipper. Rated for all coat types, including difficult, thick, non-shed and mixed texture.

The AGC Super Duty 2 Speed are the coloured AGC model. Rated Super Duty. Available in Burgundy, Lime, Fuchsia and Cobalt. Higher top speed than the Black AGC for extra speed for extra-thick areas, or badly matted coats. Also rated for full-body clipping for horses.

Andis EBC

EBC and EBC II

This Andis model has been discontinued.

An A5 model for home use, available in single speed (EBC I), or 2 speed (EBC II). It came with a starter kit for a range of coat lengths. Rated Medium Duty to Heavy Duty for most coat types. They fit all brands of A5 blades and universal comb attachments.

Andis Excel 2 and 5 Speed

The Andis Excel range comes in 2 models and 5 colours.

The Andis Excel 2 is a 2 speed corded clipper. Available in Silver or Pink. This is a run-out model that's being replaced soon by the upgraded Excel 5.

The Andis Excel 5 is the new model with new-tech, 5 speed motor. Available in Gloss Black, Magenta, Cobalt, or the multi-coloured Confetti.

Both models are rated Super Duty for all coat types, including matted, thick or difficult coats. Both are a smaller, slimmer sized clipper than most, but without a reduction in power, and still fit all standard blades. It's slimmer in the hand and also shorter. Popular for smaller hands, or fans of smaller clippers. Where the average clipper is around 18cms long and 4.5cms wide, the Excel is 15cms long and about 3.5cm wide at the slimmest area of the housing.

The Excel 5 model has the same top speeds as a 2 speed clipper, but adds 3 extra, lower speeds. The lower speeds reduce blade heat, noise and vibration for sensitive areas and anxious pets, and for use in areas where skin is thinner and vibration is more noticeable against the bone, such as legs, feet and face. The Excel 5 is also rated for full-body clipping for horses.

Andis Endurance

This model has been discontinued.

A unique corded clipper being the only model with a swivel cord, reducing cord wear and tear, and cord twisting during use. Comes in a bright turquoise colour. With new-tech brushless motor. Brushless motors have a longer motor lifestime, fewer wear and tear parts for less maintenance, and run quieter and smoother with less heat, are lighter, yet offer more power and torque (the Andis AGC are also brushless).

The Endurance has a curved, more ergonomic housing with matte, anti-slip grip panels down the sides. 2 speeds. rated Super Duty for all coat types including difficult, thick or matted areas. Rated for full-body clipping for horses also.

An A5 model clipper that fits all brands of A5 blades from size 50 (under 1mm coat length), up to size 3 (over 1cm), and all brands of universal comb attachments (for coat lengths under 3mm to over 3cm). Comes with one #10 blade. Additional blades and comb attachments available separately.

Wahl Show Pro

A trimmer-style clipper, rated Light Use for trimming all coat types, and for full body clipping for light puppy coats only. It's important to note that Light Use clippers are usually rated for trimming only, not for full body clipping (find out here why trimming and clipping are not the same).

This model comes with a Starter Kit for multiple coat lengths, and includes an adjustable blade. It is not an A5 model, so has its own unique blade, and also only fits unique comb attachments made for this model, not universal comb attachments made to fit all A5 model clippers.

For full body clipping it's best to upgrade to a clipper rated Medium Duty, Heavy Duty or Super Duty (such as the KM2 or KM5). For the widest range of blades and other attachments, look for an A5 model clipper (all Wahl's KM series clippers are A5 models).

Wahl KMSS

A popular, affordable model for home users which comes with a starter kit for longer coat lengths, avoiding having to buy comb attachments separately.

An entry-level, single speed clipper. Rated Medium Duty for full-body clipping for lighter, thinner, easier coats (also rated for trimming all coat types, but note that trimming and clipping are not the same).

Comes with a Starter Kit with one #10 blade and a set of comb attachments included for coat lengths from 1.8mm to 13mm. Good coat prep recommended  for this model to get best results. Not rated as high as other models (for heavy, thick, knotted or matted coats best to upgrade to a Heavy Duty or Super Duty model).

This may not be the lightest or quietest model in the KM range, but the much lower price does reflect that. Good value for money provided you keep the motor rating and coat types in mind.

Wahl KM2

Wahl's KM2 is a level up from the KMSS. The more popular of the two, often bought for home use as it handles more coat types than the KMSS. Also used as a lower-cost, back-up clipper for groomers to keep on hand for when their main clipper is being serviced / out of action. Similar rotary-type motor to the KMSS but with a higher, second speed for thicker coats.

Rated Heavy Duty for the majority of coat types. For difficult or matted coats, upgrading to the KM5 or KM10 is recommended. Although the KM2 can handle all coat types, proper coat prep and deshedding matters more.

The KM2 has the same rotary type motor as the KMSS, so if a lighter, quieter clipper is a must, best to upgrade to the Wahl KM5, or to a clipper with a brushless motor, like the Wahl KM10 or Andis AGC instead.

Comes with one steel #10 blade included.

Wahl KM5

The most popular Wahl model bought by groomers from Wahl's corded range. Almost as popular as the Andis AGC. Rated Super Duty for all coat types including difficult and matted. Also rated for horses.

A level up in motor from the lower-rated KMSS and KM2 models. Still a rotary motor, but fully sealed, not air or fan cooled, so it runs quieter and is lighter (a KM5 weighs 365gms vs KM2 at 600gms).

A 2 speed corded clipper available in Purple (limited edition models sometimes come in other colours, grey was a recent limited edition).

Wahl KM10

The top of the Wahl corded range. A brushless motor clipper (same motor type as the Andis AGC), and Wahl's only brushless corded. Rated Super Duty for all coat types, even matted and difficult coats. Also rated for full body clipping for horses.

A brushless motor runs quieter, is lighter, and offers more power and torque for even very thick areas of coat. There's less maintenance (no brushes to replace), and a longer motor lifetime. The lightest yet most powerful corded clipper in Wahl's range. Weighs just 348 grams (compared to a KM2 at 600gms or KM5 at 365gms).

2 speed corded available in Blue.

Heiniger Saphir Corded

Heiniger may be better known for their cordless clippers, but they do also have a corded clipper in their range. Their Heiniger Saphir Corded clipper is unique in that it can be changed from corded to cordless later (charger and battery needed, available separately).

The Saphir Corded is rated Super Duty for all coat types. It is a single speed model with a slower, lower speed for reduced blade heat. Rated for full body clipping for all coat types including thick or matted. Also rated for full body clipping for horses.

Available in Black with the trademark Heiniger swirled design.
